The legacy of Chabad in Hebron traces back to the Mitteler Rebbe, who urged his chasidim to settle there and acquire property. A generation later, the Mitteler Rebbe’s daughter, Rebbetzin Menucha Rochel Slonim, made aliya and settled in Hebron with her family and became known as the ‘Mother of Hebron’.
Throughout the decades, each Rebbe supported the holy community of Hebron. In 1911, the Rebbe Rashab took Chabad’s presence in Hebron to the next level. He purchased the Beit Romano complex, where Rav Hezkiyahu Medini, Chief Rabbi of Hebron, lived, established a yeshiva, and wrote his magnum opus, the ‘Sdei Chemed’.
The Rebbe Rashab sent bochurim from Lubavitch to establish a yeshiva in that very building.
Tragically, the property was stolen from Chabad hands at the start of WWI. It wasn’t until its miraculous liberation during the Six Day war that Jewish people could return to the city of our ancestors once more.
It would take decades more to redeem the Rebbeim’s property from Arab hands. The Rebbe, who constantly encouraged the pioneers of the Jewish settlement in Hebron, gave the community’s leaders power-of-attorney to reclaim those properties on his behalf, being the rightful and legal successor and owner of the property.
Finally, at this very moment, a new Jewish neighborhood
is being built on the land acquired by the Rebbe Rashab
and later maintained and safeguarded by the Frierdiker Rebbe and the Rebbe. Indeed, the Rebbeim acquired the land with a long-term vision, and it's coming alive today!
